If you're a road cyclist, mountain biker, racer, fitness rider or novice, Lea Valley Cycling Club could be for you.

We're an active club in East London, Essex, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire. We promote cycling both as a sport and as a social activity. We organise races and time trials which can either be Club-only events or open events. We have Club Runs most Sunday mornings and these are regarded primarily as social rides, not fast sportives or races. Members are also encouraged to organise their own group rides by using the LVCC web forum which can be accessed from this home page.

We're also active in the local community by assisting the local authority (Waltham Forest) and other organisations to promote cycling and its benefits to local people. We give a warm welcome to new members and we're pleased to be receiving a steady stream of interest from new riders.

ECCA 50 Beasant & Trangmar Frozen Out

Keen to capitalise on his success in the Counties Festival and his improving 10 time, Patrick set his sights on his first 50 mile event, the ECCA Championship, this year, based on two laps of a circuit on the A1 at Tempsford.

Derek was also riding but no-one else felt like braving the distance.

The weather forecast was dire, with torrential rain and howling winds, but with a 6.30 start, maybe we would be lucky.

At first, it seemed OK, a light breeze and only slightly damp, but as the wind got up, the rain settled in, making the conditions truly horrible, Every finisher was shaking with cold, which makes Dereks time of 2.05.19 a tremendous effort, and Patrick's 2.13.58 very respectable, particularly in view of the number of non-starters, and numerous non-finishers.

The winners time of 1.51.31 was 6 minutes outside his best, so both riders can look forward to further improvements on a better day.

In Memorium - Dave Morris - Good Bloke and Top Clubman

Sadly we lost another member quite suddenly at the end of April, Dave Morris was diagnosed with terminal skin cancer and passed away shortly after.

Dave was a long term member of the club, a member of the Morris cycling family, brother of Dick Morris, frame builder and bikeshop owner for many years at 28, Orford Road, Walthamstow.

Dave worked until his retirement for Gestetner, a duplicating machine and office equipment company, based near Tottenham Hale. He was a quiet unassuming man, know to his family as the laughing Buddha, but always willing to get involved with the club.

In the old days, most club magazines were produced on a Gestener duplicator, which involved typing a stencil, loads of messy ink and lots of swearing. The old Comet/Lea Valley magazines were produced this way, for many years by Arthur Cook, then for 3 years by Lorraine, then Dave took over , until he moved up to Leicester.

He donated an electric duplicator which ran until we moved into electronic publishing, and donated a fun article after my request for more items for the Newsletter.

In short he was a good bloke, great clubman and we all miss him, God Bless and Good Speed Mate.

Team Beasant Strikes Fear Into Festival 7.KM Time Trial

Dateline Monday 7thMay, High Easter.

Lea Valley CC, (Team Beasant) launched its assault on the Counties Festival 7 KM with a 3 pronged attack by Lorraine, Mick and Patrick, with support from El Presidente, (Ian Taylor) and El Pantero Pinko, (Mike Keen).

Braving teeming rain and high winds our glorious quintet, outdid El Simpson, who wimped out of the Festival 2 up25, claiming it was too slippery for his posh wheels.

To be fair, the winning Maldon pair, Neil Harvey & Mark Beattie, did have water pour out of their disc wheels when they took their bikes away from the HQ.

Fastest in the 7 KM was Patrick, Then Mike K, Mike B, Lorraine and El Presidente in his customary lanterne rouge.

The 2 Mikes and El Presidente took a real hammering with gale force winds and a sudden squal with icy hail, reducing them to a serious grovel.

Etape Du Tour - Lea Valley Team Takes On The World

This coming July, a determined team effort by three Lea Valley CC members, Robert Simpson, Gideon Burrows and Derek Westphel throws down the gauntlet to the cycling world, as they take on the 'Etape duTour'.

This is a road stage of the Tour de France over 184 kilometres, through the Pyrennees mountains, climbing over 10,000 feet, with time limits for completion.

The challenges are the heat, the dust, the flies, cycling groupies, autograph hunters, and not least, where to sleep, as there are some 30,000 riders and supporters descending on an area which boasts 200 hotel rooms, one pub and several dogs.

The finish is even more remote, with even fewer facilities.

Still, our guys are hard as nails, they can sleep standing up on a bike, so if they all lean on one another, 'nil problemo'.

Robert Simpson, a famous cycling name, has been really cracking in the miles with 3-5 hours each Saturday and Sunday, plus 2 hour turbo sessions twice a weak.

The other two are keeping quiet but hopefully they are sneaking in plenty of miles.

Long distance sportives or Audax rides have become popular in the club since Don Keen, Dervila O'Brien and Ian Bailey completed the Paris Brest Paris in 2003.

Appeal following death of cyclist in Richmond Park 18.12.08

Police are appealing urgently for any information
or assistance to identify a man who collapsed in Richmond Park on Wednesday 17 December.
Police were called shortly after 3pm to a cyclist who had fallen from his bike on the road that runs through the park between Richmond Gate and Pembroke Lodge.

The man was taken by ambulance to Kingston Hospital but sadly died a short while later.

A post mortem will be arranged.

The man was not carrying any form of ID with him and so far we have been unable to establish his identity.

He is described as a white man, possibly in his 30s, about 6' tall and of thin build. He has short fair hair, no facial hair and wore Lycra cycling gear in black and grey.

The bike has a white and black "MONOC" frame.

The incident is being investigated by the Royal Parks unit, based at Hyde Park.

Inspector Sarah Matthews, said:
"At this stage, we are not sure if the man fell accidentally or if there was another reason for him falling off the bike. We are appealing for anyone who may be able to identify him or for witnesses who were in the area and may have seen him prior to the incident. We would also like to hear from anyone who thinks they may recognise the description of this man and his bike."

CLUB OPEN EVENING - 22 SEPTEMBER 2009

We will be holding an Open Evening for prospective new members and also existing members, both new and old.

The Open Evening will be on Tuesday 22 September from 7pm till 10pm.

The venue will be the clubroom at our regular location: The Pavilion, Score Centre, 100 Oliver Road, Leyton, London E10 5JY, opposite Leyton Orient FC and Coronation Gardens. To see a map, click here.
The Pavilion is marked by a red circle on the map.

Go through the Score Centre car park, alongside the astroturf pitches on your left, then turn left at the end onto a footpath which runs alongside the back of the pitches. The Pavilion is at the end of the path and it is signposted.

There will be light refreshments, roller racing demonstrations/ participation, photo displays, video displays and a cycles display.
Everyone will receive a warm welcome and there will be ample opportunity to chat and ask questions.

Cycle Training at the Club HQ

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone would like to join me at the Race HQ, for a bit of cycle training round the circuit Mike Beasant took some of us round early in the year. The route goes via Henham and Thaxted.

I am doing a triathlon at Great Dunmow on 13th September, so I thought it would be a good idea to get some training in on the kind of roads I'll be racing on.

I was thinking of doing this maybe August Bank Holiday on the 30th or 31st? No idea what trains etc will be like so maybe will have to figure out getting ourselves/bikes up there.

Len Waters 25 Mile TT 2009

The 'Len Waters' is a 32nd association inter club 25 mile time trial for teams of 5. Starting individually the fastest 5 riders times of a club will be added together to find the result. The Shaftesbury CC have won this event to many times recently and we need a good team to compete against them, or at least any riders to support the event.

Michael Keen is organiser and he must receive your entries by Tuesday 8th September.

The event is on Saturday 19 September, 3pm start; course is E1/25c HQ is our bungalow at Ugley north of Stansted.

There will be a BBQ after the event for anyone who wishes it.

LONDON EXCEL SIX-DAY RACE POSTPONED

Due to a number of reasons it's been decided to postone the London Six until the end of the winter Six Day Series. And so now it will take place in
March 2010 (just before the Copenhagen-based World Track championships) instead of this October.

What started as a wet afternoon, turned out to be a fine evening, JUST.
4 new riders to the series this week, including
8-year-old Felix Mackie (LVYCC) who turned in a very fancy 24min. 29 sec. for 5 miles.
A future top rider in the making.

Next week is the last counting week for the series so make sure you're there. The week after is two-ups, tandems and solos followed by the prize presentation.

LEN COOPER MEMORIAL CIRCUIT RACE

Len Cooper was a much loved club member who died of cancer a few years ago. Len raced mainly in circuit and road races and, although not a fast competitor, he enjoyed and had much fun in doing what he did.

He was always available to our younger members for advice and support.

The Len Cooper memorial is a club circuit race of about 20miles. The first circuit is considered a “gentlemen’s race” in which the whole of the field stay together and enjoy the ride. The way Len would have appreciated.

The event is open to club members and on occasion, invited ex members only.

Please make every effort to take part in this event, which takes place on Sunday 26th October at the Hog Hill Cycle Circuit. Time of start 10am.

The Len Cooper trophy is for club members only but there will be prime prizes available to all competitors.

Club Prize Presentation Lunch for 2008

The Club prize presentation lunch will be at North Weald Village Hall on Sunday 11th January 2009.

The occasion will see an excellent four course lunch followed by the presentation of the clubs trophies.

The lunch will be 12 for 1pm and there is a very reasonable licensed bar.

The caterers are well known by some club members as those that cater for the Fellowship of East London Cyclists. A motley crew of well organised staff under the supervision of their guvner. A robust gentleman that will ensure you are fed to the gills.

Tickets will be £20.

Wow!

Andrew Griffiths scorched around the circuit, burning up the tarmac to firmly stamp his mark on the circuit. 21 minutes 57 seconds beats his previous record of 22-04. This event as always is timed by official CT timekeepers therefore we will be submitting these results to CT for inclusion in next years handbook. As for the rest of us, the evening was again wonderful and sunny, a light breeze that didn't seem to be a hindrance at all. With seven riders in the 25 minute bracket they seem to have got used to the circuit and now are putting the power down. Congrats to 2nd place rider, Adam Norris, 23m 40s, also on his first time in the series.

Looking forward to next week, hopefully pushing the numbers up to 70 entries.

Hog Hill Tuesday Tens Week 1 - 12/05/09

A new era, a new season.

The Eastway Tens are reincarnated as the Hog Hill Tuesday Tens at the wonderful new cycling circuit at the Redbridge Cycling Centre in Hainault, Essex.
Only 17 riders made it to the first event but undeterred, the organisers, the Lea Valley Cycling Club, are looking forward to the whole season of 11 events.

Phil Hersey took the top spot with a cracking time of 23:24. Only 1:20 behind the circuit record set by Andrew Griffiths (New Heebra/Lombarden) two weeks prior at the Counties Festival.

Anyone can turn up, enter on the line and compete in what traditionally has been a great mid-week event. The entry fee is only £7 with no membership fee for 2009.

LONDON FREEWHEEL - SEPT 21 2008

Just looking ahead, I am drawing your attention to this event organised by Transport for London and the London Cycling Campaign. It is part of the initiative to get backsides on saddles. Last year, the London freewheel event would have been an EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY to have been done as a club run, but due to it clashing with another event, a club race, the opportunity to develop the Club's social riding was lost. THERE ARE NO SCHEDULED EVENTS THAT CLASH THIS YEAR and my own participation has been booked since March, and I am now going to say that it is an excellent event (well, last year's was) and why don't we try and organise a club run to take part in it to publicise the Club AND help develop the social side of the club as well?

Would it be worth linking up to the Waltham Forest Branch of the London Cycling Campaign who may be leading a ride into the Victoria Park hub? The organisers are also looking for volunteers to act as marshals on the day. Please click here for the London Freewheel website!

EROICA 2008

As most of the LVCC members were out marshalling the Comet 25 on the first Sunday in October, which I understand was wet and miserable, Derek Westpfel and myself were riding the Eroica 135km sportive in the Chianti region of Tuscany.

No that’s not us ... but riders are encouraged to ride on traditional bikes (pre -1960’s) and wear traditional cycling garb.

The cyclo-sportive event and its professional road race counterpart (won by Fabian Cancellara in 2008) has helped preserve the local ‘White Gravel’ roads in this part of Italy. Over the full race distance of 200 kms half the event is on the gravel roads and half on tarmac; and so there are parallels with that other event, Paris Roubaix, that has preserved the cobbled roads of Northern France.

Derek and I started in darkness (7am) having ridden 8 miles from our hotel in absolutely freezing conditions ...so much for balmy Tuscan autumns! Already we were two hours behind the early starters but still there were hundreds (thousands even maybe) queued up at the signing on desks behind us. But not for long as we were soon passed by numerous chaingangs itching to get to that first patch of gravel.

The first section was fairly loose but by now fortunately the sun had come up and we could pick our way through using the harder packed centre of the road where possible .... and then it started descending and all those forgotten off road skills came to the fore ...or at least we managed to stay upright.

The course took us down to the outskirts of Siena and after many more farm tracks of gravel we eventually came to the first checkpoint and a chance to eat and drink something warming at last ... we avoided the chianti but many didn’t seem bothered that it was still only half past nine in the morning! It was still cold but bright and sunny and there was now time to savour those classic Tuscan landscapes of rolling hills, terracotta villas and sentinel cypress trees. And still the gravel sections came and went and just after midday the southernmost point of our route was reached and we turned for home.

And then the hills really started .... Derek walked down some of them as they were very scary and we both struggled to keep our traction on the steep ascents; even using a bottom gear of 30 x 29!

But eventually we came back to familiar roads (‘familiar’ as we’d done a 50 mile ride on the Saturday which we came to regret!) and by late afternoon we were on our last stretch of gravel and the downhill into the town of Giaole-in Chianti and the much awaited finish.

Fortunately the new owner of Graham Baxter Sporting Tours took pity on us and gave us a lift back to our hotel ... after 85 hilly miles we just couldn’t face anymore but soon we were talking about what a great event it had been and how we might do it again some day!

Footnote : Although I had looked at the weekend package for the event on ‘Graham Baxter’s’ website we eventually organised the accommodation, car hire, race entry, flights etc. ourselves and managed to do it for £200 less than advertised. If you’re thinking of entering in 2009 please get in contact with me for more details.

The Tour of Britain Needs You and Your Club Members!

Now is your chance for you and your fellow club members to become a part of the UK’s premier road race on the calendar – the Tour of Britain. Taking place between the 7th and the 14th September, the 2008 event is bigger and better than ever before with no less that fifteen host venues taken in on the route.

With the GB Cycling Team already signed up, the Tour will make its ‘grand depart’ on the 7th September from Central London, before racing through the South East, the South West, then up to the West Midlands before heading toYorkshire, the North East and then crossing the Scottish Border on the penultimate day before the big finish in Liverpool – the European Capital of Culture - where the winner will be crowned on the 14th September.

The Tour of Britain needs marshals to make this event the success that it always is, and is looking for volunteers to take on these roles. The only thing you need to volunteer is basic common sense: your role as a marshal will involve making sure that spectators stay clear of the road, managing crossing points, making sure cars don’t get onto the route and acting as an information point for spectators. Tour de Waltham Forest 2008

The Tour de Waltham Forest 2008 takes place on Sunday, 22nd June.

This is an event organised by the London Borough of Waltham Forest to promote cycling in the Borough. The event last year was successful despite relentless rain. Let's hope the weather's better this year!

The Club needs as many members as possible to help at our pitch in the Selborne Walk market square and to act as cycling chaperones on this year's Gold Ride. The Gold Ride will be 21 miles long and realistically requires off-road bikes.
The Club gazebo pitch will have the bike rollers set up again for roller races and there'll be bikes on show to catch the public's eye.

This is an important channel to promote the Club and attract new members so please lend a hand.

As another winter training season comes to an end and everyone is racing. Here at Citrus Cycling we are busy preparing for the post racing and 2009 training season.

The post racing season is a new package we have introduced here at Citrus Cycling. This new package is designed to give guests the opportunity to relax, wind down and enjoy some riding on quite Spanish country roads at the end of a busy racing season. This package runs until November when our traditional winter training season begins.

We have also introduced some new options and discounts. With prices now starting from £150 pppw.

Loan bicycles made available for those arriving without and wishing to have training etc. (only allowed to race if holding the correct BC Membership/Racing Licence).

Riders allowed on Circuit to warm up, with agreement of COMMISSAIRE of the day, crash helmets must be worn.

Those not taking part in the races will be asked to leave the circuit at 09:00 to allow final warm up for those racing.

These club runs are leisurely rides for everyone, with perhaps two speed groups depending on who turns up.

Unofficial Thursday evening rides have become established and they are becoming popular. These also start from Walthamstow Town Hall, at 7:30pm sharp

Redbridge Cycling Centre (Hog Hill) News Updates

This page supplies updated information on the Hog Hill Cycle Circuit development, especially that which relates directly to LVCC. Here also is a link to the Cycling Centre page on the Redbridge Council website.

11th May 2008

Due to construction difficulties, Hog Hill will not be available as an evening venue this summer.
This means that the Hog Hill Tuesday Tens will NOT take place this year at all. We apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused to our many cycling friends, but rest assured that the 2009 series will start on the second Tuesday in May 2009.

Tuesday club nights will continue to meet at the Score Centre at Leyton Orient. There was unanimous agreement for this at the club meeting on 10th June 2008.

Waltham Forest Come and Try Week

18th February – 2nd March

The Lea Valley CC will be opening their doors to members of the public to come and try cycling during this Come and Try Sports Fortnight.

On Tuesday 19th February at 7pm, we will be welcoming the public into our clubroom to come and chat to us, join in, in a skills circuit and perhaps take part in roller riding against the clock. We will also be running a Bike Doctor area.

On Saturday 23rd February from 9am at the Town Centre, Selborne Walk E17, we will have a display of roller riding. The public will be encouraged to have a go and see how they do against club members. We will be giving out leaflets advertising our club.

On Sunday 24th February starting at 9am we will be taking various distance clubruns starting from Walthamstow Town Hall. The minimum age for this activity will be 16. Riders between the age of 16 and 18 must have parental consent. Forms will be available on the Tuesday and Saturday beforehand.

On Tuesday 26th February at 7pm we will again have open doors at our club room which is The Pavilion, The SCORE centre, 100 Oliver Road, Leyton E10. We will have the rollers on display for anyone to use, the skills course and hopefully a Bike Doctor area.

The various activities will depend on a few of our members turning out and committing their time for the benefit of the club. It would be great to see some of our faster members turning up with their bikes to have a go on the rollers to post some respectable times.

If you are able to offer some help (especially on Saturday) please contact Ed Ward or Ian Bailey who will be organising the events.

AOB: Re the Race HQ roof repair; Les Methven informed the committee that his roofer friend is not available and that he and Ian Bailey will undertake the task of the flashing around the chimney breast. The luncheon is to proceed as agreed at the April meeting. The date will be Sunday January 11th 2009, 12pm for 1pm, North Weald village hall, licensed bar and 4 course lunch followed by the presentation of club awards.

We hope to keep the price to £20 per ticket. (child reductions not discussed!!) Raffle ticket to be sold. Ian Taylor to print numbered tickets. All seats must be paid for before the event.

4. Tour de Waltham Forest:
On Sunday 22 June 2008, Waltham Forest Council will be holding the Tour de Waltham Forest as last year. They have asked us to view the proposed routes for the day, to cycle over them and to give our opinion. Ian Bailey will be heading our involvement in the event and is to organise rides over the routes within the next fortnight. Don Keen will be the contact with WF council.
We have been asked to display our rollers etc as last year and have been offered the site of our choosing (within reason). We have asked to be positioned adjacent to the High Street outside the corner entrance to British Home Stores. This is the area where the rides start from.

5. Hog Hill:
Michael Keen, DK and SK visited the site and have agreed that a limited time trial event can be organised and successfully timed. After discussion with the management company, we hope to hold the first event on Tuesday 10th June at 7pm 60 riders should be possible depending on the light.
Hard hats MUST be worn to satisfy insurance details.
The prices have been looked into properly and they do not seem unreasonable. For the short course that we will be using the cost will be £45 for 4 hours.
In the future the cost to hire the whole circuit will be £185. This is in keeping with Eastway two years ago.
Catering will be done by the company so no funds will be raised by catering.
We will post all details onto our website and advertisements.

It is not confirmed that the club will move to Hog Hill for its regular Tuesday meetings.

6. Grant Funding:
There are many forms of grant funding for sports organisations. With the expected costs of building maintenance, equipment purchase etc it is agreed that the committee try to find out more about funding. Paul Soor is to initiate this search for information. All committee members have been asked to look out for funding opportunities and to report back to the next meeting.

7. Secretaries Reports:
President (Ian Taylor); Reported that the ECCA festival was good for the club coming =5th (and beating PCA ciclos uno by 10 points on the way) Catering for Sundays session raised £200 for the club and we have offered to do Monday as well next year.
Treasurer (Joe Mumford);
Club Captain (Don Keen); The club is in good form at the moment but we must not sit on our laurels.
Membership Sec (Les Methven); Reported that membership is good. Mick Henighan has had a heart pacemaker fitted.
Secretary (Sue Larwood); Reported that she will be happy to continue as secretary regardless of her move to Bournemouth. BC membership forms have been received and Don will forward them to John S. Sue will post all documents to Don who, in turn, will forward same to relevant secretaries.

8. AOB:
The club is in need of replacing body numbers for races. We have agreed to purchase double numbers for the road race up to 70 and 2 sets of single numbers up to 120. These to be day-glo yellow with black print. Don to look for best cost.

Cycling Skills & Audax Rides

Hi everyone,

I have a couple of things to tell you about.

Our cycling club has been invited to take part by East London Triathletes, in a joint bike handling skills session at Royal Docks.

The session will be run in Feb/March, will cost a £5, and everyone is welcome to take part.

Also, I am planning to do two Audax rides in March. The first one, on the 15th March, leaves from Ugley, near our Race HQ hut. It is 103km long, 9.30 sign on for 10.00 start.

The second Audax, is on the 30th March, from Stevenage. It is 115km classic ride to Thaxted and back. 10am start for 10.30 away.

To sign up for the Audax rides you need to go on to the Audax UK website. You can either join Audax UK, for £15 a year and each ride costs £3.50, or pay for each Audax individually and it will cost £5.

Track Sessions at Welwyn

I have been in contact with Peter Waghorn at the Welwyn Track about our going over there for training sessions. He suggests that we come over on Thursday nights for 8 o’clock. We can then, using road bikes, take part in an hour long session where we can get used to riding on the track and in riding in a bunch. For proper track riding sessions, i.e. on track bikes, we will need to wait until the 14th of April when weekly evening training sessions start. We will, of course, need to hire bikes to take part. So, I suggest that those interested go to Welwyn for the Thursday evening sessions and then move onto the "proper" track sessions from the 14th of April. To be able to ride on track session riders need to have gone on an induction course first. We can find out more about that when we go to the Thursday evening sessions. If you are interested let me know. I am happy to drive over there and I can take at least 3 + bikes. I will also make contact with Herne Hill, though I think their open sessions are on Saturday mornings. The Track League proper starts on the 25th of April, a Friday, and runs until the 12th September. However, you will need a BC license to take part. See you on Tuesday to discuss this further. Lastly , don’t forget the Good Friday meeting at Herne Hill. Perhaps we can have a ride down to it this year?

London-Paris with Medicins du Monde UK 12-15 July 2008

Following the success of its sponsored bike ride in 2007, Médecins du Monde UK (MdM UK) is calling for more adventurous cyclists to sign up for the third London to Paris Bike Ride 2008. This incredible three-day challenge covers almost 300 kilometres of hilly - but stunningly colourful - terrain.

In 2008, MdM UK’s London to Paris Bike Ride will leave London on Saturday 12 July, arriving at the Eiffel Tower in Paris by late afternoon on Monday 14 July in time for the amazing Bastille Day celebrations in France’s magical capital city. Cyclists can rest their tired legs on Tuesday 15 July, sightsee or visit MdM's Parisian offices. The return journey is by Eurostar on Tuesday afternoon.

Participants must pay a non-refundable £99 Registration Fee, then pledge to raise £1,000 in sponsorship funds.

VC Revolution Sporting TT

VC Revolution, a newly formed cycling club based in Colchester, Essex are holding their inaugural sporting 24 mile open time trial on Sunday March 23. The event starts in Birch, a small village just to the south of Colchester and heads out towards Heybridge via Tiptree and Great Totham. The riders then turn and head through Goldhanger and Tolleshunt D’Arcy before turning again at Great Wigborough. This newly devised course then heads onto the Jock Wadley road race circuit and Layer-de-la-Haye before finishing back at Birch Heath.

There will be a £200 prize list including £40 and the course record to the winner. Refreshments await the competitors afterwards.

This charity ride is run by the British Heart Foundation, like the annual London-Brighton ride. Here are the details:-

Getting There (Train):-
Special trains run from Southend Victoria to get you to the start. You'll need to book this in advance - please see the booking form. Your ticket, with departure time, will be sent along with your registration pack. Come to Southend Victoria Station 30 mins before departure time on the morning of your ride. Please note that those using the morning transport cannot start the ride before 08.00am

Other Information:-
Minimum age 14 years. Riders under 16 MUST be accompanied by an adult rider over 18 and MUST wear a cycle helmet.

In the morning a special train runs from Southend Victoria station to Stratford East station (non-stop) to get you to the start. You need to book this in advance - this can be done at the next stage of the booking process - it costs £10.50 for you and your bike. Tickets are NOT sent in the post - you pick them up from us at the station in the morning.
If you live between Southend and London, there are standard services to Fenchurch St. and Liverpool St.

In the afternoon trains run every half hour back to London Liverpool St. - you'll need to buy your tickets for these on the day at the station.

Notes from the Committee for Members' Information

Handbook Supplement
It was agreed that the supplement was correct except for the 50 mile TT record which should be allocated to Ewan Hendon. This will be notified on the website and in the next newsletter.
Club champions should also appear in the supplement and these will be published on the web and in the next newsletter.

Waltham Forest Come and Try Week
It was agreed that the club should take part in this activity. It has been discussed in the clubroom and most members put up their hands in support. On both Tuesdays 19th and 26th February 2008 the club will be opening its doors to the public. On offer will be a skills circuit on the bowls ‘green’, a bike doctor area and the rollers will be assembled for anyone to use.
On Saturday 23 February we will have a display at the Town Centre, Selborne Walk E17. The rollers will be on offer again for anyone to use, we will have a table for leaflets etc. and we will be under one of the Council's large gazebos. This will entail at least 10 club members to be in attendance at some time during the day from 8am to 4pm. On Sunday 24th February we will be hosting various distance club runs from Walthamstow Town Hall at 9am.
All members are asked to make themselves available for some time during these events.

Hog Hill
The Committee feel it is a good idea to move to Hog Hill as soon as it is ready. Early March is the time given by the owners (Redbridge Council) The facility will only have portacabins at this time. The main building will not be ready until May. The distance to Hog Hill is a concern. The club will organise a few runs to Hog Hill to familiarize members of the various routes. The club will meet there for one year and then review the situation.
The Tuesday Tens are booked to start on the 13th May and run for 11 weeks as normal. Using the 750m mini circuit we will run a 20 lap time trial. This will be a distance of 9.375 miles. By using the clubrooms and circuit as soon as they are ready we hope to be on top of the list when other benefits may come available.

Grand Christmas Raffle 2007

This year, at the clubroom, I thought it might be nice to have a raffle. This proved to be successful in that we raised the sum of £34. The first prize, a Famous Grouse Whisky cake was won by Ian Bailey.
The second, a Dundee cake was won by Gabriel Hanley and the third prize, a luxury Christmas pudding was won by Rob Smart.
Thank you everyone for taking part.

Our last meeting before Christmas was rounded off with hot Cornish pasties and hot mince pies with cream; enough energy to keep our cyclists warm for the ride home on a very cold evening.

A thought: it will take approximately 4 hours 39 minutes to ride off Christmas dinner with trimmings, Christmas pudding, custard and brandy butter, cheese and biscuits and nibbles. To everyone, a Merry Christmas and a happy & healthy New Year!

Hog Hill Progress & Site Open Day

"On 12 January 2008, The LDA and Redbridge invites all, especially youth riders, to come and see the facilities being built at Hog Hill and to take views on the off-road trails that will be marked out, but not yet constructed. Those who want a ride will have to wait till March, but Hainault Forest Country Park adjoins the site and you can ride there so it's worth a visit to view and make your comments. Please advise if you want more details or are intending to come along."

Times of access on 12 Jan were not given in the report, so please contact Don Keen or Michael Humpheys closer to the date for this. Here follows a summary of progress from the report...

* The latest news is that the upper circuit is intended to be built shortly and should be completed by the end of February.
* In March a temporary building and the off-road trails in the upper part of the site will also open. The proper clubhouse will open in April.
* The "indy" circuit may offer up to 800m of tarmac now its layout has been revised and approved.
* A revision of the road circuit could leave more land available for off-road.
Another on-site meeting will be made to ensure the road circuit can be optimised and can leave the space required for off-road trails.
* Full completion of Hog Hill is intended for sometime in August.
* The Hog Hill Tuesday 10's will start from the second Tuesday in May.
Lee Valley Youth CC will operate there from the circuit's opening, if suitable.
Other clubs are welcome to consider operating events or sessions there.
* The LDA has been advised that cyclocross and MTB XC events can continue at Hainault Forest Country Park for the 2008 events including Beastway.
* Meetings with the LDA continue on a monthly basis.

Spring in Normandy 2008

Another idea to ponder is a May-time cycle tour in Normandy and this was also discussed at the last Club meeting. We would travel by ferry to Le Havre and may involve camping at certain sites on the route, depending on interest in doing so.

Weekends at Wisbech & Beyond

Don recently visited George Moger at his new home in Wisbech, North Cambridgeshire, and George has kindly issued a standing invitation for members to stay with him and explore the area.
He can accommodate up to five or six people and North-West Norfolk is in easy reach, including The Wash, King's Lynn and Hunstanton. You might be able to pop in for tea at Her Majesty's at Sandringham, but don't clonk around in your road cleats...

Car-Assisted Club Runs

If you have ever been curious, as I have, if we'd cycle off the edge of the world once we get past Harlow or Ongar, then let's consider car-assisted rides further afield during the winter months.
This doesn't mean slip-streaming or being tied to the rear bumper, but drive-n-ride weekends to areas such as Southend and the Essex coast, Kent coast, or maybe up to Suffolk and Norfolk, weather permitting, of course. We discussed this briefly at the last Club meeting and a number of members are up for it, depending on family commitments of course.
I always wanted to go back to the Solent area where I caught the cycling bug in the mid-70's...

We use the hall end of the clubroom (Pavilion) and close the room separator so those who do not wish to take part can meet in comfort.

TfL has confirmed that volunteers for the Kent and London stages of the Tour of Britain 2006, will be their first choice for volunteers at the Prologue of the Tour de France in 2007.

In order to do this they have now doubled the amount of marshals needed at the prologue. If you would like to join the 300 people already booked for this years Tour of Britain all you have to do is this.

1) Register on the Tour of Britain Website http://www.tourofbritain.co.ukand book your place on a briefing session these sessions will last 1hour 15minutes. Times and locations are listed below.
3) At the briefing chose a location on the the Tour of Britain Stage 5 (Kent) or Stage 6 (Greenwich to St James Park) that you would prefer .

Hillingdon Womens Race-Coaching Sessions

I thought I would let you know that a training and coaching session is coming up at Hillingdon cycle circuit for women riders, who have done racing or who intend to race next year. I am definitely going.

The date of the coaching session is Sunday 9 December 2007.

The coaching sessions will start at 11.00am onwards and finish at 3pm.
